To the Lord your God belongs the heavens, even the highest heavens the earth and everything in it. Yet the Lord set his affection on your forefathers and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants above all the nations
If I asked you to either give $500 to someone or your iPod, or favorite pair of shoes, or guitar, which one would you choose?
Honestly, for me it is easier to give money than it is to give items. Perhaps you are the same way. I think as believers we have gotten to the place where we know money is not our own and so we can tithe and sow generously into other’s lives. However, this mentality seems to get lost in our possessions. There is a deep sense of ownership for our belongings. But, both our belongings and finances belong to God and we are just stewards of them.
In my school, we are trying to create a culture of honor, purity, love and generosity. What if we added to our prayer times the question, “Jesus, is there anything that you would like me to give away?” Giving away our finances frees us up and giving away our stuff frees us up too. I encourage you to not be an either/or, but a both. Be free to give away money and your possessions.
This past week we had a giving day in class and later that same day in the prayer room healing broke out. Heaven breaks open when we align ourselves with the truth that EVERYTHING we own is actually not our own, but God’s.
What would the church look like if we set as a priority in our congregations radical sacrificial giving? Well, what would an open heaven over your congregation look like?
I believe that’s the answer.
